The E.Z. Series Classes & Workshops Inspired by the Creative Genius of Elizabeth Zimmermann

"Really, all you need to become a good knitter are wool, needles, hands, and slightly below-average intelligence. Of course superior intelligence, such as yours and mine, is an advantage." Elizabeth Zimmermann (August 9, 1910 - November 30, 1999)

Elizabeth Zimmermann is credited with revolutionizing modern knitting through her inventive and common sense approach. She was a visionary who saw knitting for its simplicity, not for its complexity or intricacy. She gave knitters the confidence to “break the rules” and taught them to not only enjoy the end result, but to relish the entire process.

Most of us were not lucky enough to meet Elizabeth, but over the next year we will explore Elizabeth’s creative genius through a series of classes & workshops based on her designs and teachings. Even the most experienced knitters will learn something new, experiment, create and think outside the box.

Lynn Wilson, a devotee of Elizabeth Zimmermann, will be the instructor for all the workshops. Currently there are 3 workshops scheduled, with more to come:

The Tomten Jacket
Part 1 of the EZ Series will be the Tomten Jacket, a versatile modular sweater that Elizabeth whimsically named after a small Swedish elf. The variations for this design are numerous - hooded or collared, buttons or zipper, striped or solid. Students will be introduced to Elizabeth’s approach to knitting and encouraged to create their own wonderful Tomten Jacket. The class will cover lots of clever knitting tips, tricks and techniques. The Tomten Jacket will fit a wide range of sizes from baby t o adult. Students have their choice of what size to make, but must keep the time frame on the class in mind when choosing what size to make. Click here for materials

Sideways Mystery Mittens
Part 2 of the E.Z. Series will feature one of Elizabeth’s most novel approach to knitting mittens, the Sideways Mystery Mittens. These mittens incorporate Elizabeth’s clever shaping techniques (such as those she used in the Baby Surprise Jacket). You must bravely knit on, following her directions and trusting that somehow this unique shape becomes a mitten. How does become a mitten? Ah, come to class and solve the mystery! Click here for materials

Design Your Own Raglan Pullover using EPS (Elizabeth’s Percentage System)
Part 3 of the EZ Series will feature knitters using Elizabeth’s “EPS” (Elizabeth's Percentage System) to design a basic raglan pullover. EPS is still widely used by designers and knitters and is an excellent tool for creating well-fitting garments. It consists of a mathematical formula using body proportions and gauge. In class knitters will choose their yarn and knit a gauge swatch, then design and knit a raglan pullover sweater.
